Commitment is the inner drive that enables you to move forward and take action towards a goal. My self-determination towards my education allows me to get the assignment done and on time. It also allows me to push myself beyond what is expected through personal responsibility. Holding this type of work style will make a difference in my life in many ways. I will use my education to make a difference by volunteering in places that is needed.

Not only do I want to be the first in my family to be a dentist, but I also want to be the first to attend and graduate from college. As an African American young woman from a historically dis-empowered and low socio-economic neighborhood, people doubt that I will succeed in becoming a dentist. However, I know their negativity will not hinder me.

I have transcended into a different person from the one who unconsciously sought his own incarceration. I had a shift in my worldview that transformed my values and eventually my behavior. I now understand that the events in my life prepared me to succeed in college. I anticipate higher education as a chance for me to continue to develop my worldview and represent a different reality for those in my community.

Career Goal:  Teacher

I will use my education to make a difference by sharing the knowledge that I have attained over my years in school and in life. I believe the job of any teacher is to not only make learning fun and enjoyable but also make sure that it’s meaningful and that it will be something that will stick with students throughout their whole life. By me becoming an English teacher, I want to be able to do all of these things and finds ways to connect with my students to build relationships past the barrier of student and teacher.

Growing up in a single-parent home, Maureen learned the importance of hard work at an early age and was a positive role model for her younger siblings.  After graduating from Thurgood Marshall High School, she attended UC Davis and is currently preparing to attend medical school. Maureen’s first-hand experience of growing up in a medically-underserved neighborhood has inspired her to work directly with the same type of communities.

History http://maisinscholars.org/history/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=history http://maisinscholars.org/history/#comments Thu, 31 Jan 2013 00:00:21 +0000 admin http://maisinscholars.org/?p=336 The Maisin Scholar Award is funded by the Alexander M. and June L. Maisin Foundation.

Alexander Maisin was of Russian Jewish descent and grew up in Harbin, China, where his family had moved to escape discrimination and violence. He fled China before the beginning of World War II, and moved to San Francisco, coming as a new immigrant without any funds, and worked as a longshoreman, loading and unloading ships in the San Francisco harbor. He invested his savings into a house, then another building, eventually owning commercial and residential properties throughout San Francisco.

When Mr. Maisin died in 1995 he left a significant portion of his estate to establish the Alexander M. and June L. Maisin Foundation, to support needs in the community to make a difference in the lives of people in the San Francisco Bay area. The Alexander M. and June L. Maisin Foundation is a supporting foundation of the Jewish Community Federation & Endowment Fund.

The Alexander M. and June L. Maisin Foundation launched the Maisin Scholars program in 2000, with the first 50 scholarships of $4,000 each, for the Class of 2001. The program has expanded to now offer 75 scholarships of up to $16,000 (depending on scholarship level) to students graduating from any San Francisco Unified School District high school who have financial need and the ambition to continue their education.payday loansThese scholarships are awarded over the course of four years.

    Area of Study: Medicine (Dentistry)
Career Goal: Wants to open a safe-passage dental clinic in his neighborhood, the Tenderloin

When I was eleven, I began going to the Tenderloin Boys and Girls Club to get help with homework. The teen director helped me set priorities for school and prepare for the future. At thirteen, I took the initiative to join Keystone, a leadership program where teenagers volunteer to help the less fortunate. I wanted to learn more about being a leader by learning how to make a change in my community.

    College Attending: Fisk University

    Area of Study: Law

Career Goal: Wants to become a Senator

I completed over 140 hours of community service. I became the first San Franciscan to win a state wide position at Boys State 2011. I had become such an activist in my community, I was given a chance to build a school in Africa. That trip changed my life.  I truly discovered how much rougher my life could be and I gained appreciation for the opportunities I have in America.
