  • Answers to a few short response questions
  • Personal essay
  • Two letters of recommendation (one MUST be from a teacher of an academic subject)
  • High school transcript (sometimes called a Scholarship Record)

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

The Maisin Scholar Award acknowledges students who exhibit unwavering commitment to their future and educational goals. The award is designed to support the needs of undeserved students within the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) whose greatest strengths may not necessarily be in their academic performance, but who nevertheless demonstrate a strong dedication to continuing their post-secondary education. Maisin Scholars are awarded as much as $3,000 annually for up to four years of scholarship support. Every year, 75 high school seniors receive the Maisin Scholar Award.

You are eligible if you:

  • Are a San Francisco Unified School District senior with at least a cumulative unweighted GPA between 2.0 and 3.5
  • Will attend college or an accredited educational program in the fall of your high school graduation year
  • Are committed to your post-secondary education

Higher consideration is given to an applicant who:

  • Come from a low-income family
  • Will be a first-generation college student
  • Is historically underrepresented in higher education

We believe every student has the ability to succeed, and we look beyond just grades to see each student’s unique and inspiring story. As such, we highly encourage students who may not be eligible for other scholarships because of their GPA and/or immigration status to apply for our scholarship.
