High School: Galileo Academy of Science & Technology
College: UC Irvine
Area of Study: Medicine (Dentistry)
Career Goal: Wants to open a safe-passage dental clinic in his neighborhood, the Tenderloin
When I was eleven, I began going to the Tenderloin Boys and Girls Club to get help with homework. The teen director helped me set priorities for school and prepare for the future. At thirteen, I took the initiative to join Keystone, a leadership program where teenagers volunteer to help the less fortunate. I wanted to learn more about being a leader by learning how to make a change in my community.
High School: Ruth Asawa School of the Arts
College: Eugene Lang Univeristy
Area of Study: Art/Graphic Design/Fashion/Communications
Career Goal: Wants to become a successful fashion designer
I learned that my dream was to make my parents proud of me and have a career in the fashion industry. Although my parents couldn’t provide the foundation for me to succeed academically in the US, they provided me with a strong moral foundation. Through their example of leaving their home country, they taught me to go outside of my comfort zone. Despite my limited world, every opportunity I’ve created for myself has led to another opportunity; each one preparing me for the next. My world always seems to be expanding.
